I Am

I am from parents and step-parents

From a two story house in a one street suburban neighborhood

Where everyone knows everyone, and secrets are only kept with

yourself

I am from crazy, traditional, and fun

From backyard barbeques, pool parties and little league games

From all day bike rides, falling out of trees, and make-believe

From the ice cream man every night around eight

From Halloween decorations, Christmas after Santa Claus comes,

and the infamous orange Easter egg.

I am from Christian schools and public schools

From moms who work and dads that try

From high school sweethearts and a key to his parents house

From less traditional role models and a college heart break

I am from “what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger”

From lifelong friends, and their parents are called mom and dad

I am from minivans and pick up trucks to “Fast Cars and Freedom”

From Pretty in Pink to Transformers, Bruce and Bon Jovi to Lady

Gaga

From cell phones and laptops and single cup coffee makers,

flavored, in a travel mug, always on the go

I am from marriage, divorce, and finding my own way

From siblings who never understand and always underestimate

From parents who are just now getting to know me

From a child who teaches me more than he knows

I am from strength, independence, and a few mistakes

Walking my own journey, learning more about me every day

Realizing I’m more like the people I swore I’d never be

But happy nonetheless
